Cast and wrought iron?

In the same way that the katana is made from "high" and "low" carbon steel being folded into each other to create a strong but flexible blade, could not cast iron and wrought iron be combined in the same fashion? Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't putting cast iron pieces between wrought iron slabs, forge weld it, fold it a half dozen times be the same as a katana? Of course it wouldn't be surprising if it couldn't hold up to a steel katana but it would be strong then a sword made from either forms of iron by themselves, right?
