Roman spear?

I am making a project for school and I have to make an artifact from roman times... I took a broom handle and made it look as if it were broken in battle. I need to know two things that I can't easily find... Who where Rome's biggest foes... and what Kind of soil did they have in that area?. Remember this is back in B.C. thanks for all your help.
